The secret to creating a powerful and lasting meditation routine

Let me guess? 

 

You’re stressed out and overwhelmed. 

 

You’ve been searching for a way to calm your mind and settle your body. 

 

You’ve heard of the power of meditation but have no idea where to start. 

 

Maybe you’ve even dabbled in it a few times but just can’t seem to get the practice to stick. 

Well, you’ve definitely come to the right place!

 

For the past 2 years, I’ve begun each day with a non-negotiable morning meditation practice and it has radically changed my life! Want to know how I’ve done it? Read on. 

 

Before meditation became a staple in my self-care toolkit, things looked very different. Let me take you back to that time- I was struggling with acute bouts of anxiety, constantly rehashing the past in my mind or becoming apprehensive about the future. I was desperately leaning on my family and partner for support, and was worried that I was heading back down a familiar path of psychologists and medication. It had been suggested to me that I should meditate when I felt anxious feelings coming on. So, I tried it.

 

This is probably the part where you assume I’ll tell you that I was magically cured and that meditation worked miracles! Nope. Public Service Announcement: If you have anxiety and you can feel an attack coming on, please don’t sit in the energy of it and attempt to clear your mind. It’s not a fun time. Moving your body and shifting the energy is a much more supportive strategy. Well, for me anyway. So, as you can imagine, I dismissed it. 

 

That was until one day, a few months later, I was at home on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning, feeling calm and content. I’m not sure why, but I thought about giving meditation another go. So, I reached for my phone, pressed play on a guided meditation from the Insight Timer app (I highly recommend downloading this app- there are thousands of free meditations to choose from!), and closed my eyes. What I experienced was absolute bliss. The day that unfolded after that was absolutely magical. I’d figured out the perfect combination. 

 

Meditation as a preventative, not a reactionary measure is the way to go.

 

Ever since that day, I have practised meditation each morning. Sometimes it’s paired with yoga, sometimes it’s paired with journaling and other times it’s accompanied by a good ol’ dance off (versing myself…in the mirror). But no matter what, it’s part of my morning routine and I’m honestly a better person for it. 

 

So, there you have it! The secret sauce to creating a meditation routine that will last. 

 

Begin where you are. 

 

Don’t wait until you’re on the verge of panic or you’re too exhausted to function. Begin now. Begin when you feel good. Begin when you don’t ‘need it.’ This way it will be easier to make it a habit.

Remember that thoughts are part of meditation. There’s no need to beat yourself up if you need to keep bringing your attention back every few seconds because your mind has wandered.
