Yesterday was my 26th birthday! This time of the year is always very special to me as I share this day with my beautiful mumma, my incredible fiancé and last but not least, my awesome cousin! It’s always a big day of celebration and I wouldn’t have it any other way. How can you not feel the love when it’s multiplied like that?!
Amongst all the celebrating, I had some time to reflect on the past 26 years of my life. I’ve certainly led a very blessed and privileged life, mixed in with some struggles and adversity along the way. But as we all know, that’s where the growth happens right?! I’d love to share with you 26 lessons I’ve learned over my 26 years in the hope that you will take something away of value and resonance.
Lesson 1: Be your own best friend
The longest relationship you will ever have is with yourself so be sure to make it a good one. Spending time with myself, going on solo dates and discovering more about what makes me me, is something I deeply cherish.
Lesson 2: Growth happens during the tough times
Those difficult moments in your life, the ones where you had to step up or you had to make big decisions- those are the ones that ensure you become the person you were meant to be.
Lesson 3: Stay hydrated!
It honestly took me about 25 and a half years to realise that I was chronically dehydrated. Drinking plenty of water is not only incredibly vital for your body, but also for your mind. Drink up!
Lesson 4: Don’t look for someone to complete you, you’re already complete
This lesson I learned at a young age after putting my relationship before myself. It was probably one of the most pivotal lessons I learned in my younger years and one that has supported me to create a life where I know I’m truly whole, and where my relationship is the cherry on top.
Lesson 5: Seek your own approval
I spent many years seeking the approval of others before realizing that my own (unconditional) love and approval is what is important. Of course, there are times when I still slip back into old habits but once you know something, you can’t unknow it.
Lesson 6: Gratitude changes everything
Every. Single. Time.
Lesson 7: You’re stronger than you think
My anxiety taught me this one. We often overestimate others and underestimate ourselves. Give yourself some more credit. You are seriously epic.
Lesson 8: You’ll never regret a beach swim
‘Nuf said. Dive in!
Lesson 9: Cherish your soul sisters
I’ve come to recognize the power of women coming together more and more in the past few years. It’s so important and needed. Cherish those goddesses in your life.
Lesson 10: Stay open
Shutting down or closing yourself off to ideas or opinions won’t serve you or anyone else. Remain open and curious. It may lead to something amazing!
Lesson 11: Choose curiosity over assumptions
The times where I’ve assumed things about people before even giving them a chance, are the times where I’ve regretted it later on. Choose to be curious rather than assume.
Lesson 12: Tea is always a good choice
Lesson 13: Don’t forget to breathe!
When I was younger and I would get upset, people would always tell me to take 3 deep breaths. I would roll me eyes and wonder how that would help me. I get it now. Our breath is our anchor to the present moment and our most precious life source. Use it.
Lesson 14: Laugh often and always
At silly jokes. At life. At yourself.
Lesson 15: Trust the process
‘Everything is happening FOR you, not TO you.’ Trust it.
Lesson 16: Honour each morning

Lesson 17: Being of service works both ways
Serving others not only benefits them, but it fills you up in the process.
Lesson 18: Don’t pop your pimples!
Still mastering this one…
Lesson 19: Vulnerability creates connection
This is one of my favourite lessons that I’ve learned. My anxiety delivered me this one too. Speaking openly and honestly with people is my favourite thing ever, and the depth of connection that comes from being vulnerable is unrivaled.
Lesson 20: What people say about you isn’t actually about you
Truly. It’s about them and their perceptions. Let it go.
Lesson 21: It’s okay to change your mind
It’s more than okay actually. It’s necessary.
Lesson 22: Be sure to prioritise consciously
There have been so many times where I’ve written out a to-do list with a bunch of work related actions plus some self-care ones sprinkled in there too and the work ones have won out, leaving me no time for me. I’ve then found myself annoyed with having no time to relax. It’s always a choice. Choose wisely.
Lesson 23: Different doesn’t equal wrong
We are all searching for acceptance and love. Just because somebody goes about this search in a different way to you, doesn’t make it wrong.
Lesson 24: There’s an art to active listening
Talk less, listen more. There’s so much beauty in what other people have to say. Are you hearing it?
Lesson 25: Asking for help isn’t weak
It’s the strongest and most self-loving thing you can do.
Lesson 26: Learn, unlearn, relearn
This is probably my most favourite lesson of all. “The illiterate of the 21stcentury will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.”- Alvin Toffler
So, there you have it! I wonder what lessons the next 26 years will bring.
